□Abstract

イギリスのマンチェスターにてモリッシー（作詞、Vo）、ジョニー・マー（作曲、Gt）を中心に結成される。83年、インディーズ系レーベル Rough Trade からシングル「Hand In Grove」でデビュー。翌年2月に発売されたデビューアルバム「The Smiths」は全英チャート第2位に輝いた。84年11月にはライブ・テイクとシングルB面曲のコンピレーション盤「HATFUL OF HOLLOW」。85年2月には2ndアルバム「MEAT IS MURDER」をリリース、全英チャート第1位を手にする。翌86年6月には3rdアルバム「The Queen Is Dead」をリリース（全英2位）、評論家に大絶賛される。87年2月にコンピレーションアルバム第2弾「THE WORLD WON'T LISTEN」、3月にアメリカ向けコンピレーション「LOUDER THAN BOMBS」をリリース。この頃からバンドを取り巻く環境が悪化（バンドの方向性を巡る対立、レーベル移籍に関するゴタゴタなど）、4thアルバムのレコーディング中にモリッシーとマーの関係は発火点に達し87年8月マーが脱退、スミスは解散した。その1ヶ月後に最後のスタジオアルバム「STRANGEWAYS, HERE WE COME」はリリースされた。なお翌88年9月にはラスト・ツアーの様子を納めたライブ盤「Rank」が発売されている。
